About the Installation
This bronze sculpture, appropriately titled "Roundup", depicts the western heritage that makes this part of Canada truly unique and illustrates the importance of the agriculture and ranching industries in Calgary and southern Alberta.
Did You Know?
Definition: Roundup - the activity of gathering livestock together so that they can be counted or branded or sold
The herding technique was used as far back as the 15th century by the Spanish
A roundup requires specialized skills of the cowboy and his horse. The horses are trained specifically for the task and are referred to as cutting horses. These horses can stop and turn faster than most horses; they are trained to follow the movement of cattle.
During the roundup, a cowboy will require three or four fresh horses each day
Cutting is one of the world’s fastest growing equine sports with competitions all over North America and is very much a part of the Calgary Stampede today
