The Chuckwagon and Relay Committee promotes and maintains the integrity, heritage, and excitement of chuckwagon and relay racing at the Calgary Stampede. It conducts races with exemplary animal welfare, competitor safety, and sporting fairness while delivering an unforgettable experience that celebrates Western and Indigenous traditions, fosters community pride, and captivates audiences worldwide.

Specific Activities:

  • Deliver an engaging nightly showcase that thrills spectators in the stands and captivates broadcast audiences.

  • Coordinate race-time logistics under established guidelines and take an active role in track operations alongside race officials and safety personnel.

  • Promote the Calgary Stampede’s commitment to animal welfare by highlighting equine care, competition formats, and racing history through barn tours, community events, and media engagement.

  • Engage the corporate community in supporting the success of chuckwagon and relay racing, fostering financial opportunities for competitors through events like the Canvas Auction.

  • Host competitors, advertisers, and special guests during the Calgary Stampede to create a welcoming and memorable experience celebrating chuckwagon and relay racing.

  • Evaluate and recommend top-tier competitors committed to responsible racing and exceptional stewardship of their equine athletes.

  • Develop strong relationships with racing associations, competitors, and other stakeholders to support unbiased representation, uphold competition integrity, and promote shared success.

  • Recruit and retain volunteers with the essential skills required for the successful execution of chuckwagon and relay racing.
